The program’s goal is to accelerate the success of small businesses, measured through increased value-added product development, revenue, and job growth. Applicants must be established businesses interested in developing value-added products and bringing them to market in the Mohawk Valley. Applications are open through Sunday, November 19.

SUNY Cobleskill Introduces Bachelor of Science in Fisheries & Aquaculture

The College is proud to add to its list of agriculture and technology baccalaureate programs a new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Fisheries & Aquaculture, available starting Fall 2023. The degree program replaces the College’s Bachelor of Technology (B.T.) in the same discipline, with the B.S. label placing additional emphasis on the required ecology, chemistry, and biology components of the major.

College Receives $50,000 Mohawk River Watershed Grant Award from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced $600,000 in grants awarded to implement the goals and objectives of the Mohawk River Basin Action Agenda 2021-2026. The awards include $50,000 to provide streambank stabilization and prevent flooding along the banks of key areas of the Cobleskill Creek on the SUNY Cobleskill campus.

Early Childhood Studies Introduces New Minor and Upper-Level Course in Accessible Instruction

New in Fall 2023, Accessible Instruction provides opportunities to gain multidisciplinary knowledge and practical skills for delivering instruction to individuals with a range of learning, neurological, and physical motor challenges. The minor is available to students majoring in any of the College’s baccalaureate degree programs whose career ambitions place them in an instructional or community service setting.

Professor Doug Hammond to Serve as Director of the College’s New Northeast Regional Technical Training Center

Agricultural Engineering Professor Doug Hammond has been appointed a Director of the College’s newly established Northeast Regional Technical Training Center, helping to address the growing need for trained equipment technicians necessary to keep New York State’s agricultural, construction, and transportation fleet moving. The Center is made possible through a long-running partnership between the College and the New York State Department of Transportation.

SUNY Cobleskill’s Student Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Earns 2023 All-American Award, Recognizing Record-Setting Fundraising Year

The award honors a record-setting year of fundraising for the club in which it raised more than $26,000 at its annual Outdoorsman’s Night Out event in November 2022. That money is pooled with other collegiate fundraising efforts and put toward wetlands and waterfowl conservation efforts across the U.S., overseen by the national Ducks Unlimited organization.

The Institute for Rural Vitality Designated as the Entrepreneurship Assistance Center of the Mohawk Valley through Empire State Development

This designation will see the Institute receive $73,500 in grant funding for one year to support area entrepreneurs with business creation and growth, sales, access to financing, and job creation. Histotechnician Program Receives Heckscher Foundation Challenge Grant to Establish Training Programs in New York City and Rockland County

The Heckscher Foundation for Children has announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind workforce development program intended to create more than 1,100 full-time jobs for underserved young adults in New York State. The College is partnering with Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York University (NYU), Einstein, Montefiore Medical Centers, and Rockland Community College to establish NYC- and Rockland County-based histotechnician training programs.

Animal Science Program Produces Bull Calf Ranking Top Three in the World According to Jersey Performance Index

Through its Jersey embryo program with Select Sires, the College it has produced a bull calf ranking worldwide as a top specimen of its breed. Known as Grandslam, the calf's Jersey Performance Index (JPI) rating of 197 places him third for his entire breed based on desirable dairy cattle characteristics.

At Lake George on September 24, the duo brought in a five-bass limit weighing 16.13 pounds to capture the trophy. Students and Faculty Contribute Research to Empire State Native Pollinator Survey

Native pollinators include wild bees, flies, beetles, moths, and butterflies, all of which play an essential role in pollinating flowering plants, including native plants and wildflowers, garden plants, as well as cultivated crops. This project was a four-year, statewide effort to determine the current distribution and conservation status of a wide array of native insect pollinators in nonagricultural habitats.

The nine-month-old German Shepard recently completed training and received certification from the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services in explosives detection alongside his partner, Officer Carlianne Ferretti. Early Childhood Studies Program Awarded Grant to Fund Paid Internships for Future Educators

SUNY Cobleskill’s Early Childhood Studies program has been awarded a grant to offer seven paid internships to students working 12-credit (full-time) internships. SUNY Cobleskill has been selected as a 2021 Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope (PATH) Scholarship recipient through the Ellucian Foundation. The PATH Scholarship program provides grants to higher education institutions to support students facing economic hardship. Biomass Gasifier Project Awarded Competitive Grant from the National Science Foundation

SUNY Cobleskill’s rotary gasifier is moving into a new development phase with award funding through a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant totaling $255,879. The award was given jointly to SUNY Cobleskill, the Research Foundation for SUNY, and industry partner Caribou Biofuels, Inc. for the continued development and commercialization of the inclined rotary gasifier technology that turns waste streams into biofuels, biopower, and soil supplements.

SUNY Cobleskill hosted a, on-campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic April 28, open to students, faculty, and campus community members. More than 110 single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines were administered by students in the College’s Paramedic program. The clinic was made possible through the assistance of SUNY and the Schoharie County Department of Health. Undistributed vaccines were given to the Department for public use.

SUNY Cobleskill Receives Donation of Horse Arena Footing from RecycleBalls, Made from Recycled Tennis Balls

SUNY Cobleskill’s Therapeutic Horsemanship Program has received a donation of arena footing to add an extra layer of cushion and protection to the facilities floor. The product is a mixture of felt and rubber of used tennis balls, produced by RecycleBalls, a non-profit organization based in Burlington, Vermont. The donation totals 4,268 pounds of ground material, the equivalent of 33,000 tennis balls.

SUNY Cobleskill Receives Grant from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to Reintroduce American Burying Beetle in New York State

SUNY Cobleskill’s Environmental Management Program has been awarded $140,026 through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Recovery Challenge Grant initiative to reintroduce the American burying beetle into suitable habitats in New York State. The beetle was once abundant across much of the United States but, as of the early 1900s, was reduced to only a few isolated populations, or less than ten percent of its original range, and even these populations are now threatened.

Two SUNY Cobleskill students, Heather Heckman and Catherine McAvoy-Pindar, have received the SUNY Chancellor’s Undergraduate Scholarship and Graduate Fellowship, respectively. Grants of up to $5,000 are being awarded to 2020 SUNY graduates who maintained a GPA of 3.3 or higher, and who are continuing their education at one of SUNY’s 64 campuses. The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) today announced SUNY Cobleskill as the recipient of the 2019 Excellence and Innovation Award for Regional and Economic Development. This national award recognizes the achievements of the Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill, created in 2016 as an extension of the College’s commitment to serve the public good. SUNY Cobleskill Awarded $1.9 Million Diesel Technology and Power Machinery Workforce Development Grant from US Department of Labor

A Diesel Technology and Power Machinery Training grant award of more than $1.9 million from the US Department of Labor is reinforcing SUNY Cobleskill’s ability to develop skilled members of the workforce, and enhance opportunities for students. The grant will support initiatives in the College’s Agricultural Engineering Department, and aims to fortify the equipment distributor technician employment pipeline by establishing partnerships linking employers with technical educators and students. The resulting network will increase job visibility, create new opportunities for dealers to sponsor students, and lead to an overall improvement in the quality and quantity of Associate-degree graduates qualified to pursue equipment distributor technician positions. High Schoolers Explore SUNY Cobleskill, Engage in Hands-on Learning as College Hosts Ag High School Day

More than 1,000 students and faculty members from nearly 50 secondary schools converged on SUNY Cobleskill Friday, for the College’s annual Agriculture High School (Ag HS) Day. Students from Western New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and beyond participated in activities hosted by all five academic departments in the College’s School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. SUNY Cobleskill Early Childhood Progam to Host Public and Professionals at ACEs Conference on Trauma-Informed Care

Cobleskill, NY – SUNY Cobleskill’s Early Childhood Program will host the 4th Annual ACEs Conference on Trauma-Informed Care at the College on Wednesday, October 16. Presented by the Schoharie County ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Team, in cooperation with SUNY Cobleskill’s Early Childhood and Psychology Department, the conference will address the challenges that communities, schools, and organizations face in enacting positive change to understand trauma. Attendees will gain exposure to practical applications of trauma-responsive practices with resilience development strategies. The full-day conference runs from 9 am to 3:15 pm. SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers Athletics Announces Move to North Atlantic Conference

Cobleskill, NY – SUNY Cobleskill has announced that the College will be entering the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) as a fulltime member effective July 1, 2020. SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tiger Athletics will compete in 13 NAC sports beginning in 2020-2021, including Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Soccer, Cross Country, and Outdoor Track and Field. Cobleskill, NY – The Institute for Rural Vitality at SUNY Cobleskill has selected Cobleskill-based artist, furniture maker, and woodworker Dean Babin to be its first Arts Fellow. Babin will serve as a fellow of the Institute for 2019-2020, and will be awarded a $5,000 fellowship through the Institute’s Center for Arts and Culture. Student-Driven Service and Leadership come Full Circle, SUNY Cobleskill makes $2,000 Contribution to Regional Foodbank

Cobleskill, NY – SUNY Cobleskill this week presented a check for more than $2,000 to the Regional Foodbank of Northeastern New York. The contribution, presented by student-representatives, is a sum generated by a series of initiatives spearheaded by the student-body, that include personal care, food, and money drives throughout the Spring 2019 Semester.
